Coffee and books go together like.... Well, coffee and books. There is not a day you will not find me at my desk with a cup in hand or nearby while I do my job. Kind of like I am doing now. Sipping coffee while I spill about those good times in the public library.
You know that awkward moment you just had with a patron. The look you get from your coworker as they walk toward the door and they are waiting to discuss what just went down. The moment the door closes, they wait a beat, and then you hear, "Are we not going to talk about what just happened." Ahhh sweet public libraries. There is nothing, and I do mean nothing, more fascinating to me than human personality. In a public library you are able to see a plethora of individuals and their distinct characteristics. There are professors, doctors, realtors, teachers, construction workers, teenagers finding themselves, and of course children screaming their little heads off.
In developing collections in public libraries, it is important to pay special attention to the unique communities in which we represent and reside in. Public libraries that serve community populations under 25,000 and/or rural areas make up more than three quarters of the libraries in the United States (Chase, 2021). When COVID-19 took control of the nation, small and rural libraries were the first to offer services and many continue to outpace their urban counterparts in providing access to communities (Chase, 2021). Public libraries offer books, reference resources, and access to technology for those who may not be able to afford such things. They are important pillars in the community.
Now that we have touched on the importance of public libraries here are some links to more interesting fun happenings in libraries.
